A large file but worth waiting for!
The
Manchester Village
Total Revue Update October
2005
Manchester is quite unique in the British Isles in that it
has a "Gay Village" right smack in the City centre. Dozens of pubs and clubs all
in the one small area. It was always known to be Gay and so, for the want of a better
term, your 'normal' straight laced type of human being did not go there. This made it a
very safe area for cross-dressers, TVs and TSs as there was very little trouble, almost no
violence and you were unlikely to bump into your next door neighbour while wearing your
best frock!
Unfortunately the Village has been a victim of it's own
success in that big business noticed the area and decided they wanted a slice of that! So
they've built club after club and pub after pub. Every other doorway is now somewhere to
drink or eat. This has caused a large influx of your 'straight punters', people who enjoy
drinking on the fringe with the Gays and trannies. At the moment the area is still holding
onto it's Gay image and Greater Manchester Police have promised to step up the patrols of
the area to keep it safe, so enjoy it while you can.

Nikki, Concord member number NC-208
joined the organisation in the April of 1990 and has taken on the task, on our behalf, of
assessing the venues around the Village area to see if they are worth visiting and how
safe you will be if you visit......

In this updated review she has been joined by a
relatively new member of Concord, Roberta Jane, who joined in January of
2001 to give a two pair of eyes - double look at the venues.
To contact Nikki to help with her quest or to
let her know if anything has changed e-mail her at:- nikki@northernconcord.org.uk
Remember that on any review the
conclusions are subjective. What's okay for one person might not be for another. In the
following review Nikki's brief was to consider everyone, from the first time out
of the closet cross-dresser through to the confident experts and that's what she has tried to
do so please don't be annoyed if you visit and find her, or Roberta-Jane's, tastes different to yours.
They are
doing there best to be all things to all people and we all know how difficult
that is.
Night time in the
Manchester village.
The city as a whole has now opened its doors to all, and it is
fair to say that anyone heading to Manchester will find a bar, pub, or club to suit their
tastes, and pocket. Late night watering holes are now far more common with many
establishments open until at least one or two in the morning, however for an allegedly
cosmopolitan city we are way behind other European cities.
One area of particular interest to Concord members is
the 'Village' and in particular, Canal Street, the safe street. (perhaps the most popular area in the city and certainly for Concord
club members, or any one else of our ilk.)
During my research I've contributed greatly to the local
economy by consuming vast quantities of alcohol. I’ve tested most of the bars all in the
interest of helping you of course.
Honest!
The results of my survey will I hope, for those yet to
visit the area, assist and make your visit as pleasurable as possible. Here is a run
through of the local establishments and a revue of the safety factors and atmosphere, as I
have found them and a second and valued opinion from Roberta Jane.
We've given "Map Reference Numbers" to each
establishment, under the name, and there's a map at the end of the review to
locate them by...

Safety
& Fun
We have devised
the following code to help you. This consists of a
rating for safety and a rating for the fun factor,
so we have:-
5 Red
Blocks indicates it is safe - 1 Red Block not as safe.
5 Red Blocks indicates it was fun - 1 Red Block was not as much fun
...for example...

I will start our journey from
one end of Canal Street, from perhaps one of the first gay friendly pubs in the area, The

One of the original gay friendly venues in
Manchester, and still a meeting place for first timers.
Along with Via Fossa one of the few places in
the village that is busy all week round. At weekends they generally charge
£2 to get in, and since the re fit at Churchill’s does not seem to attract
as many nut cases as it did. There are still a few un desirables go in here
but some of the violence that went on has subsided, defiantly don’t put your
coat or bag down it will find a new friend!!!.
To the owners credit he has finally introduced
a cloakroom and this is a safer bet.
This is a tranny friendly venue but owing to
the number of straights about you will undoubtedly get the odd stare; you
would be advised to go with someone at weekend if your not sure of yourself |
Has in the past, given a warm welcome to TVs
and people of any sexual persuasion. The atmosphere has changed slightly
from when it was smaller, and now welcomes a wider cross section of people.
The overall condition of the New Union must now
be said to be basic. The pub has a dance floor, live acts, (sometimes drag),
a DJ, and three bars.
The toilets are on the rough side and there is
generally a queue to get in them. Handbags are checked on the way in at
weekends.
Queuing is generally minimal, but it is safe to
queue. Charge of £2.00 to enter at weekend. Always very busy late night.
Uncertain whether this is a gay pub or simply gay friendly - policy seems to
change weekly these days.
Also has rooms that have been reported to us as
satisfactory |

This is a very
‘studenty’ place and very mixed.
Music is ravey, but not obtrusive and the staff are
friendly. It is TV friendly, however you do need to look reasonably presentable to feel
comfortable and to avoid being stared at.
Safer to go with another one or two TVs than on
your own.
Used as a feeder bar for the "Paradise factory" (a night club). If you
go to the Paradise club you can obtain a stamp to gain admission to Manto’s after 03:00,
when only soft drinks are served, but you can continue to dance until very late or early
in the morning whichever way you look at it. |
I agree with what Nikki says.
Renamed and
modified in 2002.
Can be
patronised by some that are want to be loud and sometimes intolerant towards
us.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after. |

Eden is across
a small bridge on Canal Street, you do need to watch your heels in the gaps
and it can be slippery when wet.
Eden is a
continental style bar with bare brick walls and exposed iron beams and
pipework.
For a long
time this was my favourite haunt, since changing owners though it went
through a long spell where I personally thought that it had lost it’s sparkle.
It now seems to be getting back to it's original roots. The bar still attracts mainly 18/25 year olds
and a few hen parties. People are up dancing to cheesy disco music - but it
works.
Still a bar
worth a visit but you will get a lot more sniggers than you used to get in
here.
They still
serve reasonable food and have a presentable wine list. Staff are friendly
and punter still dance on the tables (watch the old barnet on the pipework,
it can be pretty embarrassing getting off the table with your wig looking
like a birds nest in the ceiling pipe work
|
Across a
wooden bridge, over the Rochdale canal, (watch your heels between the
cobbles and the wooden slats!).
Has a floating
barge to sit out on in the summer too!
This is an
classy bar with very friendly staff and management. The change of name,
ownership etc., does not seem to have altered it, thankfully.
Serves good
food, which accounts for its very busy early evening trade at weekends.
The bar can,
and usually does, become very busy with a very mixed crowd who, as the night
warms up, will end up dancing on the tables to an excellent blend of 60s,
70s, 80s and current chart music. Used a lot by local offices for parties.
Has always
given a warm welcome to TVs. You should be safe on your own, but do make an
effort to chat, the staff appreciate it and you will get more from the
night. Open until midnight.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after. |

A new bar that opened in 2002. A
very small bar below street level, hence the name!
Its very cosy, classy and modern,
with low comfortable couches. It serves excellent varied cocktails.
Purports to be a members bar at
weekends, although you seem to be able to get in with no problem.
The toilets are always clean and
well looked after. |

For a long
time this was the home of the Northern Concord on Wednesday nights, as such
it still welcomes tranny's but tends to like you to go to the first floor
bar preferring to keep downstairs a gay male only venue.
This bar is
very busy throughout the summer months and it can sometimes be a struggle to
get passed the crowd that spill out onto the street, though they are
generally a very friendly crowd.
Situated on
the corner of Canal Street and Sackville Street this is probably the centre
of the village and as such its clean and reasonable rooms make an ideal
place to stay the night.
Parking will
however be difficult and could end up being expensive. If you do stop don’t
forget to budget that in for many places in Manchester |
A Hotel and a
bar. A very TV friendly discrete hotel.
Rooms tend to
be in the quiet Annex, back across Sackville street, between Bar Below and
46 Canal St. Rates are reasonable and they are of a very presentable
standard and very, very convenient for the Village, being right in the
middle.
The Public bar
is now a very male oriented establishment, leather and tatoos in evidence.
The Residents
bar is quieter, located upstairs above the public bar. Staff are friendly
and it is a very safe environment.
The Rem was
the original heavy Gay bar in the Village and used to be the home of the
Northern Concord for ten years. |

Perhaps the most popular bar in the village, and winner of numerous awards.
Decorated in the style of a gothic church with many original reclaimed
architectural features. The premises is a labyrinth of layers and balconies,
so it’s not difficult to find an area to suit your mood, although there is
not a mass of seating available.
The bar opposite the entrance is always busy and has a pleasant mix of
people with a generally friendly atmosphere. Either end of the bar are
stairs down to another matching pair of bars that tend to be a little less
hectic.
Downstairs again and this is now mainly a dance bar that can get very busy,
but still friendly. The music played is not too heavy and easy to dance to.
The toilets are male to the left of this bar and female to the right they
are generally clean with plenty of space and imaginatively used cell doors
for the cubicles.
Generally this
is a good bar to visit and as nearly all the staff are gay you should have
no problems here |
An excellent
bar that has won many awards locally and nationally. Architectural salvage
is the theme here, looking quite Gothic in places.
As well as
good drinking, with a least 4 bars, Via Fossa has an excellent menu, with
its own separate restaurant area.
A lively and
intimate disco downstairs plays current chart music and dance themes. Has a
very mixed clientele, but maintains an excellent atmosphere.
There are many
separate areas to meet in, so if you are shy, you can find a quiet corner,
amidst the woodwork. or mingle with the masses with no bother.
Some of the
best ladies toilets in Village and nearly always clean with no queues. Look
out for the cell doors on the cubicles!
Open until
01:00 or later, but if you arrive late you may need to queue to get in.

Mainly upwardly mobile student and
office types on a night out.
Too cut the
mustard here and not stand out like Lilly savage at a rugby club do, you
will have to look very presentable.
Not
particularly tranny friendly.
The bar is to
the rear on the left hand side as you go in and the toilets with unisex hand
washing facilities are down stairs by the front door.
Drinks here
are an expensive commodity, which is why it’s not busy. If there were 3 or 4
of you on night out you should be ok but I personally have not bothered for
a while.
|
A very modern
bar, with not much in the way of seating. It appears to cater for the
straighter type of punters, and the now usual weekend hen nights etc.
We have never
been made to feel uncomfortable, but you must expect a few stares and
muttered comments. A lot of straight people meet in this bar and you may
well be the first sight they have had of a TV, so you may feel awkward.
The loos are a
talking point, literally, as they have separate cubicle areas but a shared
fountain for washing, obviously designed to stimulate conversation.
Open until
01:00. Has had a spate of handbag thefts so watch yours in here?

This is a very
studenty bar with many queuing from 21:00 to get in and dance to very loud
modern club music.
The crowd are
mainly 21yrs to 30 yrs and dressed in trendy gear. The main dance area is
downstairs were the toilets are also situated.
This area can
be very crowded dimly lit and hot. The sheer numbers and the occasional
smoke machine can help disguise a youthfully dressed tranny.
Drinks tend to
be bottled and a little expensive.
Only go if you
are with somebody and you feel confident, this is defiantly not for the twin
set and pearls girls!!!
|
Quite a
straight bar, originally a Czech bar also, now with a strong dance culture,
the lower part having a large dance floor.
Industrial
decor is the theme.
Bars on two
levels upstairs having a reasonable number of low couches and seats. There
is more of a club atmosphere than a bar atmosphere and queues begin early on
weekends to get in.
Friendly
enough these days, the accent is on dance music.
If you do want
to go, go early and with a couple of others for support. Open until 02:00.
Serves reasonable bar meals during the day.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after. |

I think when
the owners of this bar opened it up they forgot to do their research and
placed this in the wrong part of town.
Aimed squarely
at the 20 to 35 age group of straight people it has never really caught on,
despite having a lot going for it.
From the
Chorlton street entrance directly opposite Churchill’s you go up about 12
steps to the first bar. I have yet to find it busy and normally only ever
see 30/40 people scattered about mainly Eric normals that have little
experience of the village.
On the top
floor is the comedy stage area that on Saturday nights from about 23:00
becomes a disco this can get busy and although not unpleasant is not
particularly tranny friendly.
Not really
worth a visit unless you have nowt else to do.
(Apart from
occasional promos drinks are expensive)
Toilets
however are clean and huge about 30 cubicles never any queues
|
Basically
above Prague Five around the corner and on two floors.
Bar Risa on
the first floor has an open bar area, decorated in rich reds and purples and
stripped wood. It looks little different to many of the other city centre
bars. An addition here is the showing of short films on screens behind the
bar.
There are also
two for one drinks offers at selected times.
Jongleurs is
the comedy club/revue bar on the top floor, and is part of a national chain
of similar comedy store type venues. It has the addition of waiters to take
your food order prior to the show to negate the nastiness of interval
ordering.
Used to have a
drag show on Sunday night, and may still have. I have only been here a
couple of times, but found it safe if not too exciting.
Toilets are
clean and well looked after.
|

To continue up Canal Street
you now need to cross Chorlton Street. Where you will be faced by Churchill's Pub, I will
ignore the bars off Canal Street and return to them later, honest!

The recently re vamped pub has somewhat lost it original
appeal. It has now
taken over from The Union, and as such has attracted some of their less
desirable clientele, this I think is due to novelty factor.
A lot of the customers are the Piccadilly 21 and straight club customers
from that area although there is still a reasonably large number of gay and
occasional tranny custom.
No matter how good you look due to the influx of straights on a Friday and
Saturday night you will get a number of stares. As this bar is near to the
coach depot some out of town visitors use it as their experience of the gay
village.
Best night to go if you don’t want to be intimidated is Sunday but it wont
be particularly busy in the winter months although it ticks over nicely in
the summer
The lay out of the bar means there are two entrances, one on Canal street,
the main entrance being on Chorlton street, both entrances will take you to
bar areas, the dance floor being on the canal street side.
The door staff are friendly though and welcome trannys.
|
Was a small
pub. Refurbished extensively in summer 2002 in a very modern bright bar
style, having been extended through into the old cafe next door.
You will
always receive a warm welcome from the very friendly staff who also put on karaoke
nights and hold events, promotions and talent competitions as well
as lively DJ run discos.
Lena X (Lean
across?) is the resident friendly Drag artiste on a Wednesday.
Upstairs the
unisex toilet is a novelty. There are conventional loos downstairs too. Both
excellent standard.
Churchills can
become very busy and as a result you may have to queue to get in at
weekends. If you lack confidence this is still a good starting point, and
people will always make you feel comfortable.
Open until
2.00 a.m. |

Continuing up Canal Street
you will come to the last two bars on the street, they are a bit further up and are well
worth the effort. This end of the street suffers less with the having to queue to get in
syndrome one is large the other smaller and more intimate. Both serve food and I have
heard good reports from both, however The Slug and Lettuce (yes that’s its real name),
seems to stop serving early evening being more of a daytime eatery.

Velvet is a small intimate type of bar, with plenty of seating and a large
bar area. Access is via Canal Street and down a set of stairs.
The bar is set in a basement, although there are street level windows that
allow you to see in before you commit yourself.
Half way down the stairs is an unnerving glass panel that means the step is
effectively a gold fish tank.
Velvet has an excellent menu and I have only ever heard good reports as to
the quality of the food.
The clientele is made up mainly of older students and couples. The
atmosphere is generally friendly and have no problems in accepting
presentable girls. If you dress outlandishly you will attract attention.
Food is now the main draw so its not as busy as many bars, the upside being
its more relaxed if you just want to chill out without excessively loud
music
A friendly bar although better suited to a small group rather than going on
your own
|
Situated in a
basement you will descend down the stairs crossing a large glass panel set
into the stairs, this is a built in fish tank, novel and a little unnerving
when you first see it.
Dimly lit
Velvet has tended to move towards a restaurant with a bar rather than the
other way around, however it has a pleasant atmosphere and is generally
friendly.
This is more
the place to go if you want slightly more peaceful or intimate time and a
chat over fine wine and food. The food is quite excellent and now possibly
the best in the village.
Open until
midnight.

Essential is a vast club with two
dance floors: top for pop, ground for house music. Its a Gay/Lesbian dance
club that goes on until late in the mornings at weekends.
Rapidly becoming the club to go
to for the younger person. Basically its a house/dance/party music
club popular with the younger gay set.
Superb atmosphere. Sound systems
are LOUD! After 2.00 there is no alcohol served only soft drinks.
If you want to dance your socks
off all night this is for you ! I know quite a few younger gals have been
here many times quite safely. Long queues likely later.
Toilets can become unkempt.

A very busy
lively bar/club that generally has a queue to get in.
Set on two
levels with the gallery type bar upstairs being slightly more chilled out.
Drinks at the
bar tend to be slightly expensive, most of the 20 something trendy crowd
preferring to drink bottled water.
It gets packed
on the dance floor area and it’s a bit on the warm side so you will need to
be young dressed very trendily and ideally with someone else if your going
to enjoy yourself.
The toilets
have a stainless steel trough for a hand basin so watch your handbag doesn’t
float away, and if you need to go plan ahead there is nearly always a
massive queue |
Almost opposite Essential. This
is a sizeable bar on two levels, runs the famous Kat-Club on Thursdays.
Generally frequented by the
trendy 20’s
something crowd with a generally straight clientele, but with gay door staff
who are always pleasant and will make you welcome.
The bar does get very crowded and
trendy clothing is 'de rigeur', a posh frock would stand out a mile,
dance/club/casual clothes are the norm here.
Not the sort of place to go on
your own, but if you go with a crowd you will have a good time.
Downstairs has virtually no
seating or tables to put your drink on; also on this floor is a dance area,
the music being predominantly dance/rave and very modern.
Drinks are not unreasonable but
it may take you some time to get served.
Upstairs is a little more subdued
and this is where you want to be if you want to hold a conversation or sit
down.
Open until 02:00 or later at
weekends.

A bar for young lesbian's although they do allow our girls in as well. If
you are dressed in male attire they will charge you to go in.
Clean, bright, noisy, busy, drinks are averagely priced. |

One of the few
"pub type" premises left in Manchester situated directly across from the old
coach station on Bloom Street.
On entry the
bar is to the left and the toilets in the corner to the right.
Due to its
location it gets a colourful mixed crowd that can include a few of life’s
unfortunates, waifs and strays.
Despite this
it has a reasonably friendly atmosphere and most of the regular patrons are
gay as are some of the staff.
I personally
have never had any problems in this establishment but then again if you walk
in, in fishnets and a very short skirt you may well attract the wrong kind
of attention. |
A small pub
painted maroon, opposite the Chorlton St. Bus station, (the bus station is
currently, in 2003, being renovated.)
Not a very
safe environment in my opinion, although there are some that think
otherwise. I have heard of TVs being hassled here.
The clientele can sometimes be likened to those in the bar in the first Star Wars film?
Toilets
reasonably kept. |

Out of Paddy's go back to Sackville Street again and cross the
road an go past Napoleon's, you will then pass one of the local taxi companies
'Village Cabs', who, by the way, are safe to use, but perhaps not one the
friendliest cab companies in the world! (You will generally have to wait for a
cab and because of its location it's used by a lot of people from around the
whole town.)

As Id as the village itself and a very Tranny friendly place, this is
perhaps most trannies first stepping stone.
Now on 3 floors - the cellar bar has plenty of seating for chilling out.
You wont find a safer place to branch out into as on some Saturdays
approximately 40% of the customers are T’ Girls!!
Set on two floors the ground floor is simply a bar with background music and
a large screen TV (cathode ray, not Eric in a frock).
Up the steepish narrow steps is the dance floor area and the best loos!!
Downstairs having become mixed as the night wears on.
Drinks are reasonable and you can strut your stuff on the dance floor till
0200.
|
Napoleons is perhaps the earliest
TV friendly night-club in the 'Village' and is the oldest gay club in the
U.K celebrating 30 years this year.
Run by Anne and Melvin it has
always been TV friendly, and no matter how ill at ease you feel you will
always be comfortable at this venue.
If you think that skirt you are
wearing is too short, you will always see someone wearing less in here ! If
you are still finding your feet then this is a very safe place to go.
Nearly everyone gravitates here
after 11.00 p.m onwards. As a TV there is no entry fee and no queues to get
in.
The club itself is on two levels
with a bar and seating downstairs with Annes wonderful video compilations
playing, and a bar, DJ and dance floor upstairs.
It's not the biggest club in the
world but it does get very busy and can get a bit warm.
Open until 02:00 a.m. You can
dance the night away to a blend of disco, playing plenty of Madonna, Kylie,
70s, 80s and similar type music.
THE place to end your night!
The toilets are usually clean and
looked after, usually! Admirers are in evidence here.

A TV friendly
bar with only one draw back the Dj is right inside the door and dependant
upon mood you could be announced to the crowd inside, it’s never done with
malice but not good if you’re a shrinking wall violet.
My only other
observation of note is that this place seems to have the longest lasting re
fit schedule I’ve ever come across it never looks finished.
A small dance
floor is just inside the door and the toilets are to the back on the left
and are not the best you will see.
Despite this
it’s a safe place to be and you won’t have any problems in here and if you
enter into the spirit you could have a good night |
This is
another TV friendly pub/bar.
Immediately
inside as you walk in is the DJ, from whom you may encounter friendly
banter.
The bar has no
seating and gets crowded.
The floor is
of a split-level type and the back area tends to be a little quieter.
A pretty safe
friendly environment and has a good atmosphere.
I believe it's
open until 02:00 but don’t hold me to it. Now sometimes publicised on the
door by Sindy, a larger than life blonde TS.
Toilets
reasonable earlier on.

On Sackville
Street heading out of the village away from Canal street this corner of the

After climbing
the 4 or 5 steps that can be slippery you enter a very pleasant environment
with a fair sized bar, but it is mostly food that people come here for.
Whilst staff
are friendly you will feel and be treated by other customers like an
attraction if you don’t look half decent.
Fortunately music is not loud so it’s a nice bar if you just want to chat in nice
|
A classy
bar/restaurant. Comfortable plush couches upstairs and a small select
restaurant area.
The food and
wine here is also of excellent quality, and vies with Velvet for best in
village probably. Can be expensive though.
Down the
spiral staircase you will sometimes find a dance music type disco some
nights of the week.
Gaia tends to
be a quiet place to eat, drink and chat. You may have to book tables in the
restaurant at the weekend.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after.

A trendy bar
with the more affluent of society making it their haunt. As a result the
majority are straight with small pockets of gay people sat about.
Very rarely do
you see any trannies in this bar, which is a shame, providing you dress
presentably you, will be okay especially if there is a group of you.
Plenty of
seating around the bar and very clean well-presented loos.
During the
week on the balcony above the door sometimes has live music along the lines
of salsa or mild jazz, this however can be a little haphazard as to when
it’s on.
The opposite
side of the bar is another seating area but remember the floors raised so
the bar is only 2ft high on this side so if you sit there you will
effectively be on display, not for the self conscious |
Decorated in a modern continental
style, the main bar area has subdued lighting and plenty of seating around
the walls, windows, couches, and individual tables.
Behind the bar is a another
quieter raised seating area, where the level of the bar is at the same
height as the low tables. There is a smaller balcony seating area upstairs,
the purple lounge.
Downstairs is B.E.D, a restaurant
bar area that has 6 or so alcoves and tables, but also a floor level
built-in bed area, where you can lounge and drink and chat in a more
horizontal position. We kid you not!
The food and wine here is also of
excellent quality particularly downstairs. Lobster can be had with 24 hours
prior notice!
The clientele
are mainly students and the well heeled or trendy. All the staff are very
friendly and you will enjoy the slightly quieter nature of this bar, during
the week. Tends to be busy at weekends, and on Thursdays which seem to be
the main student night?
Often has
excellent subdued jazz fusion/R&B music provided by a young female DJ on
these Thursdays.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after. |

Built
virtually from scratch some 4 /5 yrs ago at £1.5 million quid this
beautifully fitted out bar is very popular.
Its
split-level layout and open balcony looking over Canal Street mean its
popular with the well heeled who like to look good in pleasant surroundings.
They serve
food and a good array of beverages and are only slightly dearer than other
bars.
Now pretty
mixed its not as tranny friendly as it used to be but if there are 2 or 3 of
you it will be fine, but as anywhere dress to fit in not stand out if you
don’t want to over hear comments
Editors Note!
The last couple of reports we've had of our member eating here is that the
food was very poor and the food service was absolutely abysmal with just
one waiter serving a table of 12. |
A very
impressive clean and classy modern bar on two/three levels, with an outside
terrace looking out over Canal St. The balcony area even has patio heaters
to keep off the night chill whilst sat outside.
Usually, the
upstairs bar is the first port of call for most, these days after the NC
meeting.
Very friendly
staff and clientele. An impressive range of beers, wines and spirits too.
The upstairs
restaurant and bar features a classical/jazz piano player during the week,
and serves good food at reasonable prices, catering for light bites and full
meals. Special meal offers are common also.
A very
convivial atmosphere for a chat or a bite to eat. Does good cocktails too.
Definitely a
place to be seen in. Gets very busy at weekends and you may have to queue to
get in.
A DJ plays
modern sounds at weekends. The place to venture out to from the NC for the
first time.
The toilets
are usually clean and looked after.

Of course this is the home of the Northern Concord every Wednesday night.
On Wednesdays this is about as safe as it gets, not too busy, friendly staff
and a number of differing bars to chill out in, you will though have to get
used to the increasing trend towards unisex loos.
Of course on a Wednesday you can dress in the excellent changing room that
Northern Concord paid to have built there, and point your heeled feet in the
direction of the piano bar.
The changing room is open from 18:30 till 23:00, so you can relax and chat
and change back later.
Downstairs is a lot louder than it used to be, and can get busy but you will
have a good night. The bars are well stocked and with the exception of
Saturdays you will get served quickly |
Recently changed ownership from
Julia Grant in 2002 and modernised and redecorated.
This is of course the safest
venue in the village for TVs etc. on a Wednesday.
A very friendly atmosphere exists
and you will always be made to feel welcome in the Northern Concord
meetings. These are held in the 'Piano Bar' on the first floor next to the
new unisex toilets.
It is a quiet private bar area
where you can meet people and feel comfortable.
The NC also paid to provides the
dressing room on the stairs, on a Wednesday from 6.30 p.m to 11.00 p.m.
where you can change in peace, in front of large theatrical type mirrors.
On Wednesdays this is very much a
launching pad for forays into the village for the first time visitor and
seasoned campaigners alike.
At weekends the bars are more
crowded, and a Pianist plays sing along type music in the Piano bar.
Downstairs a DJ and a Drag DJ vie
for your attention over loud disco and chart music.
It can become very crowded
so get there before 10.00 p.m. There are some seating areas to chill out in
upstairs.
Incidentally, when you do finally
do decide to throw in the towel trot outside the Showbar and just around the
corner to the premier village taxi company 'Rainbow Cars', who are very TV
friendly and have helpful pleasant staff, who drive clean reliable cars.
|

Out of the Village area by about a 3 to
4 minute walk is The International Hotel where the Northern Concord held a few
of its
Christmas Dinner Parties, although they stopped using it when the standards
dropped.
If you are coming to visit Manchester with
your frocks there's the Rembrandt Hotel and the New Union Hotel which we consider
safe and friendly. A few of our members have stayed at the new Ibis Hotel on
Portland Street, they report it was excellent accommodation and there was no
bother about them being dressed, although they did keep a low profile.

Where Can We Eat?
There are, as we've
said, places to eat in the village, but most of them stop serving food early in
the evenings to concentrate on night life. There are however other "relatively"
safe areas to eat in Manchester as a TV, depending on your own personal
confidence level.
There's the "Curry
mile" which stretches away from the University area along Wilmslow Road, a strip
of fluorescent neon lit Indian restaurants and jewelers. More than 10,000
people eat here a week. The cooking is essentially Punjabi. (Nearly every other
Indian restaurant in the UK tends to be Bengali owned.) There are more than 50
restaurants; just to look which one is fullest, or which decor seems most
appealing. All seem to be award winning too, but they are cheap, and only a 5
minute taxi ride from the Village. If you are discrete, we believe, you will be
safe too.
Manchester's
Chinatown lies just behind Portland Street 2 minutes walk from Napoleons. It's
culinary reputation rests on the shoulders of its great and varied restaurants.
Chinatown has Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Nepalese menus on offer with a
support cast of smaller good value restaurants and cafes. Try the Tepanyaki for
Japanese food cooked on hot tables before your eyes, or the Lin Wah and the Ho
in Faulkener Street for their dim sum?

Where Are The Cash
Machines?
We all need cash and there are 3 cash machines in the village or close by. The
easiest is actually in Churchills, a Royal bank of Scotland is on Whitworth St
at the New Union end of the village, and a Nat Wet is on Portland Street and
Sackville Street junction. Take the usual precautions when using cash machines -
be aware of who is around you before you start your transaction!

A "Personal"
Reflection From Nikki
The village over the passed 3 years
has changed significantly. Having started out with 3 or 4 gay venues in a run
down part of town, developers and entreponeurs slowly moved in to make the
village a great success. Soon after word of mouth spread the news and the number
of visitors exploded, whilst good for business it had the knock on effect of
bringing in a lot of people who came to stare at the differing lifestyles and
snigger.
Some Television producers soon
realised that there was potential for making a fly on the wall programme that
would shock and entertain and soon the whole world wanted to come and see for
themselves. This meant that the numbers of straight and
less than sympathetic people increased considerably.
The first real signs of problems to
follow was the increase in popularity of Mardi Gras, it soon became apparent
that the event could not support such numbers.
The number of bars exploded and the
number of petty criminals in the area increased. The people who made the Village
what it was soon began to feel unsafe and stopped coming to town, the remaining
public who had then come to spectate slowly drifted away. Greed and concerns for
people’s safety caused Mardi Gras to fizzle and become a shadow of its former
self, causing resentment amongst the village community. Certainly over the past
two years with the exception of Bank holiday weekends the Village is nowhere
near as busy and the main custom seems to now come from students bored with the
Oxford Street area they normally frequent.
Some bars have changed hands and
others closed, or struggling for business. Sadly some of the people who helped
build the Village into a friendly and safe place to be have failed to return. In
my own view I no longer believe the village is as safe or as friendly as it was
prior to the television cameras opening up the village to the world. It is
however still safer than many places in the country and there are a few simple
rules to follow to make your visit safe and enjoyable.

Some “Important” Tips For Your Safety
 |
Dress to suit the surroundings, if you going into a predominantly straight bar
don’t go in looking like a black PVC Bet Lynch. You can bet she would get
stared at and attract unwanted attention so will you |
 |
If you’re out all night wear comfy shoes!!!! |
 |
Keep a hand on your handbag or at least don’t lose sight of it (how would you
get home all dressed up with no keys or cash) |
 |
Personally I always conceal at least the taxi fare home somewhere about my
person it’s handy for any emergency |
 |
Try and think a little more venerably whilst some of us dressed as a bloke can
wrestle an aggressor, dressed up with a wig and high heels do you want to do
this?? |
 |
If someone makes a comment that you don’t like laugh with them don’t aggravate
them. If they are really giving you a hard time mention it to the door staff
or bar staff, after all who are they going to cause trouble with next |
 |
Remember the village is on the city CCTV monitoring system so big brother is
looking after you |
 |
Don’t be afraid of the police in the village they have seen it all before and
like village people because they know they don’t cause the problems, its
generally outsiders and they will help you and treat you politely |
 |
And finally
you’ve come out to enjoy yourself and people will want to talk to you, don’t
be a wall flower and be prepared to answer some quite personal questions,
people are intrigued .If you send out a positive attitude it will make it
easier for the next tranny. |

Well I hope you enjoyed our
guided tour of the 'Village' and you have many pleasant nights in the area.
Please remember the majority of
ordinary folk go out to enjoy themselves and there is no more trouble in the 'Village'
area of Manchester than in any other UK city centre. If you exercise common sense and don’t
make yourself stand out by being stupid, you will have a good time.
People are now more generally
intrigued by what we do, so if they ask questions, don’t take offence, try to be polite
answer honestly and further our cause by showing them we are fun people who enjoy life and
underneath our frocks we're very similar in lifestyle to them.
